Easy ways to save water in your workplace kitchen

Here are some quick, clever ways to make every drop count and get everyone in the business more water wise.

1. Choose water-wise appliances

Invest in taps, dishwashers and other gear that has a high rating - Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS). The more stars, the better. Efficient fixtures save big on both water and bills over time.

2. Fix leaks fast

A slow drip can waste thousands of litres. Do a quick 3 Step Leak Check [insert link] regularly and get leaks sorted early.

3. Be smart with the dishwasher

Dishwashers are thirsty. Choose a high-rated model, use the eco setting, and only wash full loads. Skip rinsing under the tap - use the rinse-hold function instead.

4. Ditch the running water

Don’t thaw food under the tap. Pop it in the fridge overnight. Same result, zero waste.

5. Turn things off

Don’t let water or equipment run when not needed. Turning off taps and valves saves water instantly. An easy win.

6. Compost food scraps

Garbage disposal units use about 6 litres of water a day. Compost what you can rather than sending scraps down the sink.

7. Rethink rinsing under running water

If you have two sinks, fill one for washing and one for rinsing or use a bowl of water instead of running the tap. If you only have one sink, stack washed dishes in a rack and rinse with a pan of water.

8. Add tap aerators

A simple flow-controlled aerator can cut tap water use by up to 50%. Small change, big savings.

9. Catch and reuse

Waiting for the hot water? Catch the cool water and reuse it for plants, rinsing dishes or cleaning.

10. Check your hot water settings

If the water’s too hot and needs cooling with cold, you’re wasting both. Adjust the thermostat instead.
