Turn water wisdom into real savings
Water use in schools can be a big (and expensive) surprise. Between ovals, lawns and gardens, we’ve seen some schools spending up to $300 a day just on watering.
That’s where Living Water Smart comes in. We work with schools to reduce water costs through our STEM-based schools program and water use health checks. We’re here to help - just email us at savewater@powerwater.com.au.
Simple water-saving tips for schools
Check your irrigation system regularly
Most schools water at night (great start!), but it’s important to check the whole system at least once a month.
Why? One irrigation zone running for 30 minutes can use around 4,500 litres a night (about $9). If there are damaged sprinkler heads or split pipes, that can jump to 12,600 litres, costing around $26 per night. Over a month, that’s an extra $510 down the drain.
Look out for dark green patches next to dry, brown areas - a classic sign something’s broken. Adding more water usually makes it worse, not better.
Rethink how much lawn you really need
Could some areas become native gardens or even a bush tucker garden? These options suit our climate, use far less water, and create great links to the curriculum.
Try watering every second day
If you’re watering daily, consider switching to every second day and watering a little longer. This encourages deeper roots, healthier grass and a more resilient lawn that can better handle heat.
Smart water use saves money and it’s a great lesson for students too.
